Recent college graduate, job search help?

Question by M: Recent college graduate, job search help?
I have been told by numerous human resource departments: “your qualifications do not match those of the applied position” etc.. I have over 5 years of experience in my field in both subordinate and managerial positions, as well as two related bachelor’s degrees. Needless to say I’m very careful to apply for positions that I meet and normally exceed the minimum requirements as posted on applications/websites etc.. Is there a behavior or technique I should be considering or altering?

I’ve applied for positions in with the major casino/resort brands in Las Vegas to no avail. It seems that human resource departments either do not screen applications or simply ignore them?! They allow no in person contact unless you have applied via web server and been offered a conditional interview for screening purposes. If you get that far, there is never a representative from a department present- and most established corporations leave no way to “follow-up” via telephone or otherwise.

Please lend your thoughts and suggestions. I realize this is open-ended, but I am new to this type of non-referral based employment system.

Thanks,

M

Recent college graduate but you have 5years experience in managerial positions?. I suggest redo your CV, then never expect too much with the interview. Go for lower admin work then work your way up. always remember to have a JOB first than I want the BIG corporate company immediately. getting a JOB first.. everything else follows

A couple points come to mind from your question:

The economy in the Las Vegas casino/hotel business isn’t awful – it’s worse than awful. No matter what your qualifications are, you may not be getting serious consideration because there are no jobs there.

When you are up against a computerized resume screener, you have to focus on including the keywords the screening software is looking for. If you are applying for a posted position, read it carefully and pick out the qualifications they are looking for. Be sure to include exactly those words and phrases in your resume. That means you almost have to tailor your application to each ad – it’s a lot of effort but it works.

Does that mean that you *are* familiar with referral-based job seeking? If you are, I would go with that. Tap your network. Take people out to lunch. All that stuff.

You can still post your resumes on Applicant Tracking Systems, but most people agree that networking is the best way to get a job.

    Good luck.

PS Are you committed to Las Vegas? Casinos are opening all around the country, like Maryland. Maybe you could apply there?
